Ayurvedic
Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit words meaning ‘life and ‘knowledge’. Ayurveda is more akin to a way of life than a specific therapy. Ayurvedic physicians believe that disease comes from four sources. Physical, mental, accidental and natural causes and like many eastern health philosophies aims to achieve balance between natural universal forces. The ‘vata’ (like the wind) controls the nervous system and movement. The ‘pitta’ (like the sun) controls energy and all biochemical processes. The ‘kapha’ (like the moon) controls growth and development. The physician will take a holistic approach to treatment, taking account of diet, sleeping patterns, eating patterns, breathing patterns, emotional and mental states, circulation etc. Treatment can vary from natural medicine to relaxation, meditation, dietary advice, massage and breathing exercises. Ayurvedic medicine has gained in popularity in the UK over the past few decades particularly with the growth of immigration from the Indian sub-continent.
